Denture Frequently Asked Questions:

Why are my dentures hard to get used too?

Often it takes time to get used to new dentures, they may feel uncomfortable or awkward for the first few weeks and until your cheek and tongue muscles learn to hold them in place they may seem loose.  Your saliva flow may increase and you may experience soreness or minor irritation where the dentures are placed around your gum ridge.

Can I eat any food I want once I get dentures?

When you first get your dentures eat soft food cut into pieces and eat slowly while trying to use both sides of your mouth at the same time to prevent the dentures from slipping.  Once you feel more confortable with you new dentures you can work your way up to eating chewier foods such as steaks and vegetables.

Why am having trouble speaking with dentures?

When you first get dentures you might need a little practice when speaking with dentures.  You should try reading slowly and out loud in front of a mirror while repeating any difficult words.  If your dentures slip when while you are getting used to speaking with them simply bite down and swallow.

How long should I wear my new dentures?

When you get your dentures at TruCare Dental your dentist will recommend how long you should wear your new dentures.  Typically your dentures should be removed before going to bed since your gums may become irriated if they are constantly covered.

Will I always need to use denture adhesive?

Dentures are made to securely fit your mouth however while getting used to your dentures your dentist may recommend a dental adhesive.  While adhesives aren’t recommended for long term use but they are useful during the adjustment period.

How long will my dentures last?

Like natural teeth, dentures are likely to last longer when they are properly cared for.  Dentures are delicate and will break if dropped.  When storing them keep them in a safe place away from children and pets.  You should also clean your dentures daily, rinse them off with water and brush them in order to remove any plaque and food particles.  Be sure to not let your dentures dry out or they could lose their shape.  When not wearing your dentures soak them in cool water or a denture cleanser soaking solution but never use hot water since it can warp your denture.

Do I still need to go to the dentist once I get dentures?

Even with dentures you still need to visit your dentist regularly.  Oral exams are important to check for potential gum dieses or oral cancer.  Also if have a partial denture and still have some teeth, professional teeth cleanings are necessary to keep your natural teeth healthy.

Why do my dentures no longer fit they way they used too?

Over time your mouth can change or your jaw could realign, if that happens then your dentures may not fit securely and can cause problems.  If that happens our dentists will check to see if your dentures still fit properly or need any adjustments.

How do I fix my dentures?

Professional training is needed to correctly fix a denture and ensure it doesn’t cause further damage.  So never try to repair your dentures by yourself.
