Just How Often Should You Replace Your Toothbrush?

When you wonder how long you should keep our toothbrush, we have to keep in mind that your toothbrush is a breeding ground for microorganisms.  With that being said many experts say that these germs aren’t a hazard to your teeth b/c germs need moisture to survive.  So as long as your toothbrush is given time to completely dry after you use it, it should be safe to use.

Toothbrush Tips

In order to provide yourself the best oral care there are things you can do when using your toothbrush that will decrease the odds of having germs or microorganisms live on your toothbrush.

  • First rinse your toothbrush under the faucet
  • Second keep your toothbrush in an upright position
  • Third let it air dry
  • Fourth keep your toothbrush away from other toothbrushes

The tips above are all you will need to do to take care of your toothbrush but if you very particular about the care of your toothbrush you could also rinse it with mouthwash.  Mouthwash could be used to soak your toothbrush which will kill 99% of germs on it.  We have also heard of people soaking their toothbrush in boiling water for 5-10 seconds but this isn’t recommended and probably won’t help sanitize your toothbrush but only damage it.

So When Is It Time for a New Toothbrush?

The ADA recommends obtaining a brand-new tooth brush (or brush head, if you utilize an electric kind) every 3 months.  It is also recommended to replace your toothbrush if you see the bristles pointing in different directions…this is normally due to brushing too hard.

Easy-to-Remember Reminders

Some tooth brushes have bristles that modification colors to indicate they’ve broken down (a glaring suggestion it’s time to purchase a new brush).

Another good reminder is when office calls you for your 6 month recall appointment to get your cleaning.  When you come in our dentists will give you a new toothbrush following your checkup.  So if you need a checkup then call our office at (505) 369-0074 and remember to brush everyday, three times a day.
