Wisdom Teeth Removal & Numbness

Wisdom Teeth Removed Pros & Cons

So you have finally mustered up enough courage to get your wisdom tooth removed. While it was definitely not easy getting to this point, you are glad to put this behind you. However, you might notice that several hours later you might be experiencing numbness after wisdom tooth surgery. This would likely be a side effect from the local anesthesia that was administered to you during the procedure. It would be because of this reason that you might be experiencing a slightly tingling feeling, numbness, or “pins and needles”. However, if the numbness seems to persist for more than a day, then you might actually be suffering from temporary paresthesia. This condition should disappear shortly but it could linger for a couple of hours, days, or even months. In most cases, the sensation will go away, and is just a temporary side effect.

What is paresthesia with wisdom teeth and why does it occur?

Simply explained, this would be an oral sensation that would occur during the dental surgery. This altered feeling could occur due to nerve damage wisdom teeth. The mandibular and lingual nerves would be at risk of being damaged during oral surgery mostly if you have lower impacted wisdom teeth. Even though both of these important nerves would run across the bottom of the jaw, they would differ in terms of where they would extend. This is because the mandibular nerve would branch out to the chin and lips, whereas the lingual nerve would position in relation to your wisdom tooth. So, if either of the nerve would be close to the tooth itself or even the surrounding tissue, then there would be a greater possibility of you experiencing paresthesia.

Wisdom Teeth Removal in Albuquerque NM – What does it feel like?

So, if you are suffering from paresthesia, then you would experience prolonged loss of sensation in the lip, tongue, and/or chin. This could include the loss of taste, feeling, temperature, and pain. Some people suffering from it would describe it like being “numbed” with anesthetic. In addition, this sensation may not go away after a few days and could even be persistent for an extended period of time.

Will Wisdom Tooth Paresthesia go away?

In most cases, you would find that numbness after wisdom tooth surgery would be gone after a few days or weeks. However, in some rare cases, it has been found that it may last for more than six months and in some cases it might even be permanent.

How to remove wisdom teeth and the numbness?

There would be no specific way in which you would be able to make the numbness go away; you would just have to wait and see how it manifests itself. While waiting, it would be important that you would not stress which might turn out to be quite hard. You should try to think in positive terms about the outcome and also remember that the chances of you having permanent paresthesia would be less than one percent.

On the other hand, if the paresthesia would last more than 6-12 months, then surgery could be an option.
